Soup dumplings eat all sorts of tasty things: broth, ginger, pork. But cheese? That’s a different story.
It’s Little Dumpling’s Pleat Day, the day she officially becomes the perfect little soup dumpling, and she has big, bold plans to make it a celebration that’s all her own. But when Mama says it’s tradition to wear a plain beige wrapper and drink a thermos of boring broth, Little Dumpling must find a way to honor her family’s traditions while making a little room for herself.
Soup Dumplings Don’t Eat Cheese! is a warm and playful story about culture, identity, and the courage it takes to be exactly who you are.
Perfect for: ages 4-8 · read-alouds at home and in classrooms · conversations about family traditions, self-expression, and loving yourself as you are.
Why author Lynn Chen wrote this book
Soup dumplings are held to famously strict standards: an exact filling-to-skin ratio, a precise weight, a set number of pleats. Growing up, Lynn felt held to standards too, with family comments about her body that made it hard to simply enjoy food. In 2011, she co-founded Thick Dumpling Skin, one of the first online spaces for Asians and Asian Americans to talk openly about body image. This book carries that work to its youngest readers: a soup dumpling who doesn’t need to be “perfect” to be loved.
“I hope this book helps you, and those you love, see that you are enough, exactly as you are.” — Lynn Chen, from the Author’s Note
About the creators
Lynn Chen is an actress, writer, and body image activist who has spent years creating honest, personal stories across film, podcasts, and the web, always in service of helping others feel a little less alone. Soup Dumplings Don’t Eat Cheese! is her first book, inspired by Thick Dumpling Skin, a body image blog she co-founded to reclaim the complicated feelings so many of us carry around food, identity, and belonging. Lynn lives in Los Angeles with her husband Abe and their dog Miles, and can often be found playing Angry Birds while listening to podcasts on double speed. Learn more at lynnchen.com.
