Our virtual storytelling program is back!

Personal storytelling is transformational. And we know that the journey home to our creative selves is an especially tender experience for AAPIs. This Spring 2026, we're excited to expand our newest program offering, a 6-week live storytelling workshop that centers, affirms, and celebrates our lived experiences as Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Drawing upon traditions of family lore or entertaining friends over a shared meal, participants will generate and craft true stories from their lives for performance. Each step, from choosing the story to tell to finding the courage to perform live, deepens self-awareness and builds confidence. Led by instructors Miyo Tubridy and Dani Huang, our program meets weekly online for 6 weeks starting in mid April. Sessions include games, model stories, brainstorming, sharing story drafts and receiving personalized feedback. This program is for writers who want to move beyond the page, stage-shy folks who want encouragement to enter the spotlight, or anyone who has the yearning to tell their story out loud in community.

Identity Focus: Each cohort of Beyond the Page has a unique identity focus. This year's program is for AAPIs who identify as LGBTQIA+ and/or gender-expansive.

Program dates: April 13, 2026 - May 18, 2026 (Register before April 6)

Beyond the Page meets for five weeks of story development and a final virtual story slam and celebration with the Slant’d community and invited guests. All sessions are held online, enabling participants to join across geographies.

We especially want to invite AAPI writers who identify as disabled, neurodivergent, trans, mixed race, adoptees, West Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander.

Why this identity focus?

Through Slant’d Programs, we nurture bold voices that reflect the deeply varied experiences of the Asian diaspora living in America, especially as they intersect with other marginalized identities facing active systemic and institutional discrimination.

In 2026, we intentionally create a safe affinity space for our LGBTQIA+ and gender-expansive community members and a platform to uplift and protect their stories. At a moment when queer and trans lives and rights are under direct attack, your stories deserve to be nurtured, held, and heard.

From Miyo, Beyond the Page's Program Manager: “It’s a rare and beautiful experience to be in community with people who share multiple identities. It’s even more unusual to have a space where the focus is telling stories about our lives and finding connection and support. When our majority queer Programs team began dreaming up our new storytelling program, it was clear that one of our early cohorts was going to be for folks who identify as LGBTIA+ and gender-expansive. I’m a queer mixed-race Japanese American woman, and I have never been in a queer AAPI storytelling space! I’m so excited to co-create this iteration of Beyond the Page with the amazing participants I know will answer this invitation.”

What will I learn over the six workshop sessions?

Fantastic question! We've outlined our six week workshop series below, so you can get a clear idea of how the program is structured.

>> Week 1 -
The Power of Live Storytelling
Gather ideas for stories through a sample story, generative ice-breakers, games, and sharing 1-3 minute stories.

>> Week 2 - Hear Your Voice
Brainstorm with a sample story, generative activities and prompts, and share 3 minute story drafts in small groups with shout-outs.

>> Week 3 - Craft & Draft in Community
Practice giving positive and constructive feedback with a sample story, craft a strong story arc, add specific and sensory details, and share 5 minute story drafts in small groups with feedback.

>> Week 4 - Witness & Be Seen
Discuss a sample story, craft scenes and dialogue, last chance to try out a new story, and share 5 minute story drafts in small groups with feedback.

>> Week 5 - Performance as Risk Play
Performance prep strategies, practice being in the spotlight, and “dress rehearsal” with final feedback.

>> Week 6 - Celebration in Community: Story Slam!
In a story slam hosted by one of our instructors, each storyteller has five minutes to tell their story to an affirming audience of their invited guests and Slant’d community members.

Note: This will be a public-facing virtual event for our wider community, team, members! Save the date ;)

I don't share any of the identities specified. Can I still participate?

Thank you for your interest! Our program offerings this year intentionally center the voices of people of all Asian backgrounds who identify as LGBTQIA+ or gender-expansive.

If you do not share any of these identities, we ask that you refrain from registering to create safe space for the focus of this cohort. Don't worry! Future cohorts will have different focuses, and we hope you’ll participate in one that best fits your experience..

Do I need to have any previous experience with storytelling or performance?

No experience necessary! If you’re a writer or a performer, you’ll use the skills you're already familiar with to draft your story and enhance your performance, but we’ll provide prompts, feedback and support for anyone to tell a story with confidence. We welcome stage-shy folks who want practice and encouragement to enter the spotlight.

What do you mean by live storytelling?

Stories crafted for performance and told without notes! More spontaneous than a memorized monologue or reading a written memoir. More intentional and practiced than an off-the-cuff story told to friends.

What can I do to prepare?

Come with an open mind and something to write with and on. You may come with an idea of a story you want to tell, and you’ll generate new story ideas. Everyone has many true stories of their lives to share, and we’ll help you find and shape them.

Will I get one-on-one mentorship?

The cohort is a small group of 10 participants and 2 instructors, so we’ll be able to give feedback to each person in small groups of 5. We will not be able to provide one on one coaching.

What is the cost and how does the sliding scale work?

In the spirit of accessibility, the registration fee for Beyond the Page is on a sliding scale for folks to pay what is currently comfortable for them. This is an honor system. These fees support Slant’d in building financial sustainability so we can continue the work we do here. Please see below for the sliding scale breakdown:

>> Student: $84 ($14/week) — for active, full-time students.

>> Level 1: $120 ($20/week) — subsidized by Slant'd and Level 3's contributions.

>> Level 2: $240 ($40/week) — true price of the program. Supports Slant'd programs current offerings and sustainability.

>> Level 3: $300 ($50/week) — abundance! Helps subsidize Level 1 attendees and supports Slant'd's future offerings.
